Each virtual challenge is different and sodisp offers a range of different challenge types which allow you to create the perfect virtual experience for your participants.

For each race you can also set the activity type you allow, such as run, walk, bike, swim, etc.

You can combine both individual and team/relay races in the same virtual event.

Best Result

The 'classic' event goal: the faster you go, the higher your ranking. As everyone's route is different and no one will have the exact race distance we make sure to scale all matching activities to the goal distance of the race to make comparable results. So even if you run 9.5 km instead of exactly 10 km, or maybe even 12 km, we will automatically scale the results to make it comparable with others. We do this by scaling their time (and points!) to the race distance. For example, when you run 3% more distance we'll reduce your time and points with 3% as well.

Extra options:

Track Challenge

A Track Challenge is exactly identical to the Best Result except that you must upload the gpx file of the course and each participant should run exactly that track in order to qualify. This allows you to host on-your-own events where participants can complete the race course any time they like within the allowed period.

To allow for some GPS measurement error margin a certain offset from the course is allowed but the activity must:

  1. Start near the start of the course track
  2. Follow the exact course track all the way (within a certain buffer)
  3. Finish near the end of the course track (also some margin is allowed)

Because this challenge type verifies the actual gps data of an activity manual entries are not allowed for this activity type. Only Garmin, Fitbit, Strava or gpx upload activities can qualify.

Total distance

the total distance goal is the perfect option to keep participants engaged with your virtual event. Each activity they complete gets added to their total distance. Ranking of the event will be updated in real-time.

Extra options:

Total elevation

this is the preferred option for virtual trail runs. We combine the total elevation gain for all the activities of a user during the virtual challenge. Optionally you can also set the minimum elevation gain for an activity to qualify for the rankings.

Extra options:

Total Calories

This new challenge type is similar to the total distance challenge in a way that it adds all activities into a score. Instead of the distance, this challenge type takes the (estimated) amount of calories as the score.

Please keep in mind that calorie estimation is nowhere near exact science and even Garmin and Strava provide rough estimations on the amount of burned calories during an exercise. For manual entries we either use the ACMS or the METS method, based on the activity type. These formulas have at least a 15% error margin.

Extra options:

Total Stairs

This new challenge type is only available to stair climbing races and combines all climbed stairs of qualifying activities. If you have a stair climbing race and rather have a virtual race where the goal is to climb X stairs as fast as possible please use the Best Result challenge type in combination with Stair Climbing as activity type.

As neither Garmin, nor Strava nor Fitbit expose the number of climbed stairs through their APIs only manual entry (for now) is possible for this challenge type.

Extra options:

Badge Challenge

This is the most advanced challenge type and unlocks several creative and powerful challenge configurations.

Please read the separate documentation page for all information on this challenge type.
